Erik Peter Verlinde (born 21 January 1962) is a Dutch theoretical physicist and string theorist.

Erik Verlinde

He is the identical twin brother of physicist Herman Verlinde. The Verlinde formula, which is important in conformal field theory and topological field theory, is named after him. His research deals with string theory, gravity, black holes and cosmology. Currently he works at the Institute for Theoretical Physics at the University of Amsterdam. At a symposium at the Dutch Spinoza-institute on 8 December 2009 he introduced a theory of entropic gravity. References[edit] External links[edit]

Power Shift - Learn. Meet Jessica, a real power player: she invented a soccer ball that generates electricity when you kick it. Play a quick game of soccer with your friends, and you can power your household light for an entire evening. Jessica tested her idea in South Africa and Kenya. Now she has her own company called sOccket to help her spread her big idea all over the world. And she's not the only young social innovator changing where and how we can get power. Meet Hugo, born and raised in South Africa. Your LEARN mission this week is to figure out: Who else is inventing creative, sustainable ways to power our everyday lives? Try searching "social entrepreneur" and "electricity", OR "social innovation" and "energy", OR "sustainable energy" and "creative solution".

The Myth of Gravity. Erik Verlinde after Marie Curie Colloquium.

Induced gravity. Induced gravity (or emergent gravity) is an idea in quantum gravity that space-time background emerges as a mean field approximation of underlying microscopic degrees of freedom, similar to the fluid mechanics approximation of Bose–Einstein condensates.

Induced gravity

The concept was originally proposed by Andrei Sakharov in 1967. Sakharov observed that many condensed matter systems give rise to emergent phenomena which are identical to general relativity. For example, crystal defects can look like curvature and torsion in an Einstein–Cartan spacetime. This allows one to create a theory of gravity with torsion from a World Crystal model of spacetime[1] in which the lattice spacing is of the order of a Planck length. Sakharov's idea was to start with an arbitrary background pseudo-Riemannian manifold (in modern treatments, possibly with torsion) and introduce quantum fields (matter) on it but not introduce any gravitational dynamics explicitly. New theory of gravity might explain dark matter. A new theory of gravity might explain the curious motions of stars in galaxies.

New theory of gravity might explain dark matter

Emergent gravity, as the new theory is called, predicts the exact same deviation of motions that is usually explained by invoking dark matter. Prof. Erik Verlinde, renowned expert in string theory at the University of Amsterdam and the Delta Institute for Theoretical Physics, published a new research paper today in which he expands his groundbreaking views on the nature of gravity. In 2010, Erik Verlinde surprised the world with a completely new theory of gravity. According to Verlinde, gravity is not a fundamental force of nature, but an emergent phenomenon. Newton's law from information In his 2010 article (On the origin of gravity and the laws of Newton), Verlinde showed how Newton's famous second law, which describes how apples fall from trees and satellites stay in orbit, can be derived from these underlying microscopic building blocks. No need for dark matter Adapting the holographic principle.

Erik Verlinde publiceert nieuwe theorie over zwaartekracht.
