News from Zentangle. You may have noticed this new tangle appearing here and there.

News from Zentangle

This tangle is one of a rare "species" in our zentomology of tangles. Its basic structure is a malleable tessellation, but tripoli takes things a bit further. It's not just tiling adjacent triangles - a delightful tangle in itself - but what you then do within and between those triangles that yields amazingly different and fun results. This tangle also introduces an effect called an Ehrenstein Illusion where tips of these triangles in a way that creates a space which seems brighter than surrounding areas.

This is a fun tangle which invites all sorts of tangleations. News from Zentangle. Here are some stories and pictures we've recently received.

From a conversation with Kate Murray, CZT, [email] Paris, France, Greeting from Beijing, China. I am here working with my consulting customer, [name of company], at their International Seminar. News from Zentangle

We had fun puzzling over clever ways to create a tangle from this pattern without using florz' underlying grid. We then went into a dimly lit room with miniature books and tapestries. I (Rick) took my glasses off to see them better. When we came out, I again saw this brilliantly backlit window without my glasses and saw a new pattern in that same window. News from Zentangle. Facets is a great new tangle sent to us by Nancy Pinke, a Certified Zentangle Teacher (CZT) in Elko, Minnesota.

News from Zentangle

We like facets because it is unique, easy to do, fun to shade and you can use it in many ways. After you establish your unique facet grid, it is created with only one stroke, a straight line, similar to paradox. And when you see the instructions, you immediately understand how to create it. Here's a four-tile Ensemble that Nancy created using facets. (See a larger version on this blog entry.) Here are a few Zentangles that Rick and Maria created with facets (larger images on blog). As you familiarize yourself with this tangle, explore doing it in different ways. Another way to play with this pattern is to tangle it in sync with your breath - top line, inhale - bottom line, exhale - etc.

News from Zentangle. Here's a note we recently received from some new friends in Florida (two of which are attending our fall training seminar!). "A few months ago, a group of four members of the Surface Design Guild of Sarasota discovered your Zentangles. We've caught the fever. The four of us decided to do an ensemble, where each of us drew a basic string pattern; then cut that in four equal parts.

We then traded our pieces with the other three players for them to complete. A month later, when we met, the pieces were returned to their owners, and our four ensembles were reassembled. "I do not have to tell you how impressive they are, and others could hardly wait to start their own ensembles. "Because of the enthusiasm we are considering including an ongoing Zentangle 'swap' as part of our monthly meetings. "Your newsletters are indicative of how many people you've touched. "I'm attaching the results of my ensemble from the first swap.
