UMPCPortal / Carrypad schedule for Computex Starts Monday

Not only is it located in the heartland of notebook, netbook and mobile computer design and manufacture but it’s an event that I get additional access to through our friends at Intel. I’m part of the Intel Insider program which is covering my trip to Taipei and giving me some guidance and behind-the-scenes access to information and people. It was last year that we spotted the first Moorestown ‘Mediaphone’ and learnt a lot about Moorestown internals. We had a preview of the Viliv S10 and N5 behind closed doors and walked away with a review sample of the Viliv X70. This year it looks to be an even more exciting as the sector warms up even more. The schedule: I fly out tomorrow (Saturday 0900 CEST) and arrive on Sunday (1100 local time) to meet up with JKK, Sascha, and many other tech-bloggers.

Monday: Preparation, sneak peek! Tuesday: Wednesday: Video: MeeGo Tablet Edition Close-Up. MeeGo Tablets are at Computex! Posted on 01 June 2010 by Chippy I’ve just posted news over at UMPCPortal about a Wistron MeeGo Tablet based on Moorestown, running MeeGo. There’s more though. Take this for a huge hint about what’s happening at the Linpus stand… And this, a netbook platform being used to demonstrate MeeGo. (Video demo of that one later) Asus Eee Pad and Eee Tablet launches. Intel’s Computex Keynote (Atom News Live) Dadi Perlmutter is on stage now and we’re waiting for the important Intel Atom news.

To analyze the Intel position relating to tablets buy taking that ‘tablet silicon’ rumor ‘Moorestown-W’ tips and previous rumors about an ‘Oak Trail’ platform. It turns out that it was on the money because Intel have just announced Oak Trail, the next generation ultra-mobile platform. MeeGo Tablets Land! Wistron W1. Moorestown, MeeGo and ‘No Demo U. Posted on 01 June 2010 by Chippy I’ve just stepped away from a tablet-fest. It’s like I’m partying in 2006, Origami style, here! The difference is that these devices are thin, look good and run from 9 to 12 inches.

The most interesting was, of course, the thinnest device which apparently runs on Moorestown with MeeGo which means, this is a smart Slate. E.g. UMPCPortal - Ultra Mobile Perso. Day 0 is over, Day 1 has started and in a few hours, the doors open but before we get into that, let’s go over the Day 0 news from my point of view.

UMPCPortal - Ultra Mobile Perso

It stared with an interesting leak press conference with ARM which highlighted cloud services, a changing market and Android. Lots of Android! You’ll see ‘Eagle’ on that second slide. Eagle is the next gen, high-end core from ARM that I expect to filter in in late 2011, early 2012 based on the timescales we’ve seen with other ARMv7 products. Expect it to be a refinement of Cortex A9 spanning the same territory as Moorestown and Medfield from Intel. Intel debuts new Atom chips for razor-thin netbooks. Intel is debuting new members of its Atom family of microprocessors today that can be the brains of everything from low-power laptops to razor-thin netbooks. To show off the new technology at the Computex 2010 trade show in Taiwan, Intel is demonstrating its Atom chips inside a razor-thin “Canoe Lake” platform, which can serve as the electronics for a dual-core netbook that is just 14-millimeters thick (half an inch).

With that size, the prototype netbook is the world’s thinnest such device. The thin netbook runs Intel’s “Pine Trail” version of the Atom processors. Intel makes and sells microprocessors and chip sets that are part of computer platforms, or generic designs for the innards of a machine. Computer makers then take those platforms, customize them, and offer the products for sale.

Intel shows uber-thin and tablets Netbook at Computex. Computex is without a doubt a big show for Intel, and they have not disappointed: the chipmaker is showing this ultra-thin Netbook concept in Taiwan.

It is amazingly (if not “magically”) thin and features the latest Atom for Netbooks on a platform that uses DDR3 memory. If this thing has a good (7-10hrs) battery life, it will a awesome gadget to take for a ride. The concept has been done entirely by Intel, we suppose to show what’s possible to do with Atom, and to inspire PC makers (I’m sending a request for a chiclet keyboard). Wow! Just wow. Intel is also showing a cool-looking tablet (photo in the full post) equipped with an Atom processor, a webcam and… a USB port (wink, wink). Intel 'Oak Trail' is headed for tablets in early 2011. Today at Computex, Intel finally took the wraps off of its next-generation Atom chips for netbooks. Sporting dual cores and DDR3 memory support, the”Pine Trail Dual Core” CPUs will start appearing in systems in time for the holiday season. The new CPUs should offer vastly improved performance for content creation (ex: encoding video), multitasking, and video playback, while still offering strong battery life. In addition to Dual Core Pine Trail, Intel announced the immediate availability of the Atom N455 and N475, which like the N450 and N470 before them, run at 1.66-GHz and 1.83-GHz respectively, but use DDR3 memory instead of the older DDR2 standard. The new chips include the quad-core Core i7-875K processor, which runs at 2.93GHz, and the dual-core Core i5-655K, which runs at 3.2GHz. Intel is trying to bring flexibility into its chip offerings from which users can benefit, said Dan Snyder, an Intel spokesman. PC makers have been asking for unlocked chips, Snyder said. The Core i7-875K includes 8MB of cache and can run at speeds of up to 3.6GHz.

The chip is made using the older 45-nanometer process and draws 95 watts of power. The Core i5-655K includes 4MB of cache and can run at speeds of up to 3.46GHz. The processors integrate memory controllers and are able to run two threads per core simultaneously, which helps boost application performance. The new tablets will run on various versions of Microsoft's Windows 7 OS, with customized user interfaces, and feature a variety of ports, like USB, HDMI and card readers. The new Asus Eee Pads come in two flavors, a 12-inch model, the EP121, and a 10-inch version, the EP101TC. Not all details about the new tablets have been unveiled, but Asus said the EP121 is powered by an Intel Core 2 Duo processor and has an integrated webcam, HDMI, SD card reader and a USB port, claiming a 10-hour battery life (like the iPad). Size-wise, the EP121 weighs just over 23 ounces and is 0.48-inch thick. The EP121 will run Windows 7 Home Premium, while its smaller sibling, the EP101TC will run on a new Windows Embedded Compact 7 OS. Asus debuts netbook app store. Computex 2010 | On the third birthday of the Eee PC which lit the touchpaper on the netbook revolution Asus has gone public with the world’s first netbook app store – and somewhat surprisingly it’s not called the ‘Eee Store’.

The Asus App Store is being built on top of Intel’s AppUp Center which provides an app store framework for Atom-compatible programs. The client will be installed onto all Atom-powered Eee PC netbooks in the second half of the year. While only Windows apps will initially be featured Asus says that software for the open-source MeeGo OS will appear on the store’s virtual shelves in 2011 – which also provides the clearest indication that Asus will adopt MeeGo for netbooks. Speaking of netbooks Asus’ new range of fourth-gen Eee PCs includes the Eee PC 1016 1018 and Seashell 1015. Asustek releases two tablets - Hardware - Technology - News - CR. Intel Trims Netbooks To Just Half An Inch Thick, Adds Dual-Core. The bad news: Intel’s new dual-core Atom processors won’t be appreciably more powerful than what’s in your netbook now. The good news: a Pine Trail netbook reference design Intel introduced today at Computex is only slightly thicker than an iPhone.

Intel was able to halve the thickness of the current generation of netbooks with their new Canoe Lake “innovation platform”, which employs thermal cooling for Pine Trail netbooks instead of the traditional fans. The end result: a super-slim form factor that also runs less hot than today’s models. It’s important to keep in mind that this is just a reference design, and that we’re likely a long ways off from actually seeing a 14mm netbook on a Best Buy shelf. Those dual-core Atoms, on the other hand, will start showing up in products in time for the holiday. Intel talks technology concepts, plans Atom update - pc componen. Intel plans to talk about its future technology and product plans at Computex, but doesn't have any big surprises lined up for the Taiwanese hardware show, which opened Tuesday.

One of the biggest announcements that Intel has planned concerns a new thermal "technology concept" called Canoe Lake, which Intel says will enable hardware makers to build very thin netbooks. But executives aren't offering much insight into how the technology works. "I would rather not get into the details of the technology itself. It is a thermal technology that is an innovative way of extracting heat from the box, which then enables the form factor of the device to become much thinner," said Matthew Parker, general manager of Intel's Atom client division. Canoe Lake is designed to let hardware makers build thin netbooks using Atom chips that require a fan to dissipate excess heat that the chip produces.
